Session description: Blockchain technology (BCT), originally developed for mining of cryptocurrency, has a potential to solve the problem of data reliability, transparency, and traceability, thus guaranteeing the trustworthiness of information. Because of these characteristics, BCT has been applied in various different areas. Its benefit for the food and beverage supply chain is especially noteworthy. In this panel presentations we will be giving the overview to the attendees about BCT, its characteristics and impact on the different areas; We will describe the impact of BCT on the agri-food supply chain and we will highlight the potential of BCT in this field through case study and simulation. Finally, we will share the results of our ongoing project regarding BC application in wine industry on the example of three Italian wineries.

Bio:  Roberto Leonardo Rana is associate professor in the scientific area "Commodity Science" at the Department of Economics - University of Foggia (Italy). He took the degree in Natural Science in 1987 and in Biology Science in 1992, magna cum laude, at the University of Parma (Italy). He attended the PhD course in “Environmental effects of the commodity production" at Bari University and in 1996 discussed the final dissertation of his thesis: “Environmental effect of human activities and natural resources: the Ofanto river basin”. He also has taken a MASTER in Methods and Technologies for Environmental Recovery and later a MASTR in Sustainable Mobility. In addition, he has spent a very interesting stage period at European Commission Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (Bruxelles, Belgium) in 1990 and at IFREMER (Institut français de recherche pour l'exploitation de la mer) Centre (Sete – France) in 1991. Furthermore, in 2000 he spend three months in Angola at Department of Health place in Luanda to study, as specialist, drink water pollution. He had been a member of research team of FP7-REGPOT-2011-1 project call STAR*Agroenergy. Recently he has start a collaboration with the Laboratory for Anthropogenic Resources of Vienna University of Technology.
